The Rocking Chair

The Rocking Chair...

Two elderly residents, one male and one female, were sitting alone in the lobby of their nursing home one evening.

The oldman looked over and said to the old lady, "I know just what you're wanting, and for $5 I'll have sex with you right over there in that rocking chair."

The old lady looked surprised but didn't say a word. the old man continued, "For $10 I'll do it with you on that nice soft sofa over there, but for $20 I'll take you back to my room, light some candles, and give you the most romantic evening you've ever had in your life."

The old lady still says nothing but after a couple minutes, starts digging down in her purse. She pulls out a wrinkled $20 bill and holds it up.

"So you want the nice romantic evening in my room," says the old man.

"Get serious she replies. I want it four times in the rocking chair.

Busy week

mood: average
music: none

Well, it's been a real busy week. Had a Thermodynamics test on wednesday worth 20% which I'm pretty confident I failed. Also got marks back for my first Design assignment. Not good. As far as I can tell, I'm going to fail design this semester even if I get full marks on the second assignment. The problem is there isn't a final. *sighz* Also handed in my second calculus assignment, which took me 2 full nights, but at least that's done.

Exams are up in 2 weeks, which means I really should probably get to studying. Only problem is the various tests and assignments due in the next fortnight. Ah well, we'll see what happens, I guess.

So, that's pretty much what life's been like for Gav recently: work, work, more work.

Pleasepleaseplease let summer get here soon.

I thought today would be a good day.

It wasn't.

Bah, whatever.

Edit: Just realised the first 2 lines of my post is the same as K's. Creepy.

Hail Friendster!

mood: pretty good
music: collin raye - i volunteer

Well, the most remarkable thing just happened. Through the wonder that is Friendster, I've just found a long lost friend: Daryl Chew, my primary classmate whom I had totally lost contact with. Word. ^^

So if you haven't yet tried it out, why not give it a shot? You just might find some long lost buddies, too! ;)

So, where has Gav been, exactly?

mood: pretty good
music: bon jovi - thank you for loving me

Sorry I haven't updated for such a long time (2 months and a bit :P ); I've been really busy since uni started. We had the Singapore Ball, and I went rock climbing and watched movies and did other stuff that uni students do. I also ran for the MUISS Exco elections with a bunch of friends, but we lost, which was kinda expected. I was actually kinda hoping we wouldn't win, cuz we were just running to make a point. I'm pretty tired now after running things for so many years, so it's nice to take a break from extra-curricular stuff for a year and see what happens after. :) I also handed over SAM to the new committee, so that's a load off my mind. It's the mid-sem break now so I've got more time, though I really should be studying for the exams, which are in 4 weeks. Ah well. *shrugz*

Oh yeah, I recently joined the Friendster thing, so if anyone's also on it, feel free to add me using my email addy: gav@lightingthedark.org

Which kinda reminds me I gotta get 'round to doing a new website. Hopefully I'll have more time after the exams. :-/

Oh yeah, Evelyn's grandparents are in town for a week so I've been to the casino a bit lately. Won $250 on Friday night and lost $150 on Saturday. Well, it's still a profit, I guess. Will try not to get invited along too many times before they leave on Thursday.

Oh yeah, found out a bunch of us have birthdays pretty close. Evelyn's was on the 17th, mine on the 19th, Alex's the 20th and Paul's the 24th. Pretty cool. :)

Yeah, guess that's about it. Hope I'll have time to write again soon. ;)

This is the sort of English up with which I will not put.

An interesting article in today's straits times interactive:
English up with which I will not put

It discusses the eternal question: What, exactly, is "proper" English?

An excerpt from the sidebar:

Let's face it - English is a crazy language. There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; and neither apple nor pine in pineapple. English muffins weren't invented in England or French fries in France.

And why is it that writers write but fingers don't fing, grocers don't groce and hammers don't ham? If teachers taught, why don't preachers praught? And if Dad is Pop, how come Mom isn't Mop?

The plural of box is boxes, but the plural of ox is oxen not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese, yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice; yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.

If the plural of man is always men, why shouldn't the plural of pan be pen? If I spoke of my foot and show you my feet, and I give you a boot, would a pair be called beet? If one is a tooth and a whole set are teeth, why shouldn't the plural of booth be beeth?

We speak of a brother and also of brethren, but though we say mother, we never say methren. If the masculine pronouns are he, his and him, why aren't the feminine she, shis and shim?

Doesn't it seem crazy that you can make amends but not one amend, that you can comb through annals of history but not a single annal?

Sometimes, I think all English speakers should be committed to an asylum for the verbally insane. What other reason could there be for saying that people recite at a play and play at a recital? Or ship cargo by truck and send cargo by ship? Or have noses that run and feet that smell?

How can a slim chance and a fat chance be the same, while a wise man and a wise guy opposites? How can overlook and oversee be opposites, while quite a lot and quite a few are alike? How can the weather be hot as hell one day and cold as hell another?

Have you ever seen a horseful carriage or a strapful gown? Or met a sung hero or experienced requited love? Have you ever run into someone who was combobulated, gruntled, ruly or peccable? And where are all those people who are indeed spring chickens or who would actually hurt a fly?

You have to marvel at the unique lunacy of a language in which your house can burn up as it burns down, in which you fill in a form by filling it out and in which an alarm goes off by going on. English was invented by people, not computers, and it reflects the creativity of the human race (which, of course, isn't a race at all).

That is why, when the stars are out, they are visible, but when the lights are out, they are invisible. And why, when I wind up my watch, I start it, but when I wind up this essay, I end it.

The Truman Dark|ighter Show

mood: not half bad
music: hanson - i will come to you (acappela version)

last time on the truman dark|ighter show, we saw gav hard at work on the new sam website while also helping out with the new semester's orientation programme. join us now, as we look into the life of our valiant hero after one week of the new term...

well, orientation's come and gone. pretty much without a hitch, which is obviously good. a lot less organised this time, though the new intake was a lot smaller than first semester too (250+ compared to 800++). so anyway, it was a fun week of boring administrative duties mixed with other, less boring duties like scavenger hunt and the city trip. oh yeah, and all the returners are back, which is both good and bad, if you catch my meaning. ;) (yes, i'm talking about you)

so...one week into uni and the workload ain't letting up none. got my results back, and wasn't too happy about it. one near-pass, 3 passes, 2 distinctions and a high-d. really crappy, considering what i got last year, but i guess i'm lucky i "passed" everything (we're allowed one near-pass in second year).

so, after that fiasco which was the examinations, i decided i'd really better start studying early this sem. like now. so far, i'm a wee bit behind, but i guess that's what sundays were meant for. :)

in other news, we're trying desperately to sell tickets for the singapore ball. so far we've sold around 15 tickets, largely thanks to the good people at muiss. thanks guys! : ) only another 5 tables to go. *sighz*

in related news, the club is off skiing at falls creek for the weekend. they left on thurs night, and should be back tomorrow night. i was supposed to have gone with them, but i find out on wednesday that my design tute on friday was worth 5% of the subject grade that would be lost by default in the event of absence. that was a really tough decision: skiing vs 5%. but design I was the unit i near-passed last sem, and design II is supposed to be even more difficult, so there wasn't much choice, really; i need all the marks i can get. so i just lost $420. dammit.

a relatively good weekend (so far) compensated for it, though. we celebrated allan's birthday on friday night at brian's place over in glen waverly, and that was definitely a blast even though no one remembered to bring alcohol. ;) and i went and got a new mobile with edwin today. it's on the new three thing, and after playing with the handest for a few many hours like a kid with a new fisherprice, i have to say it's pretty nifty. the wonders of technology these days. :) only negative: there went the study plans for tonight. ::)

so....yep, guess that's pretty much what i've been up to lately. will honestly try to update more frequently, when i can. off to evelyn's place to study tomorrow, then back to uni on monday. ::)

(p/s: if you're anywhere near melbourne, come for the kriffing ball!!! ;) )

tune in next time for more misadventures of a curious character...

Quick Update

Hey everyone-who's-interested,

Part of the new Sam website is up. Go to http://sam.lightingthedark.org to check it out and let me know what you think. :)

I know it looks a little plain at the moment; hopefully I'll have time later to do up some banners of some sort for the different sections etc.

Oh yeah, and I changed my email addy to gav@lightingthedark.org, just so you know. :)

Beer Logic

Dear all,

looks like we shd drink to this right now....seriously

cheers....

"Sometimes when I reflect back on all the beer I drink I feel shamed. Then look into the glass and think about the workers in the brewery and all of their hopes and dreams. If I didn't drink this beer, they might be out of work and their dreams would be shattered. Then I say to myself, "It is better that I drink this beer and let their dreams come true than be selfish and worry about my liver."
~ Jack Handy

"I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day. "
~Frank Sinatra

"When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading."
~ Henny Youngman

"24 hours in a day, 24 beers in a case. Coincidence? I thinknot."
~ Stephen Wright

"When we drink, we get drunk. When we get drunk, we fall asleep. When we fall asleep, we commit no sin. When we commit no sin, we go to heaven.
Sooooo, let's all get drunk and go to heaven!"
~ Brian O'Rourke

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy."
~ Benjamin Franklin

"Without question, the greatest invention in the history of mankind is beer. Oh, I grant you that the wheel was also a fine invention, but the wheel does not go nearly as well with pizza."
~ Dave Barry

BEER: HELPING UGLY PEOPLE HAVE SEX SINCE 3000 B.C.!!!~ "Unknown"

To some it's a six-pack, to me it's a Support Group, Salvation in a can!

And saving the best for last, as explained by Cliff Clavin, of Cheers.

One afternoon at Cheers, Cliff Clavin was explaining the Buffalo Theory to his buddy Norm. Here's how it went:

"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this... A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells.

"Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine.

"That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

No new shelf for Gav

mood: alright
music: david tao - liu sha

went down to the new ikea at richmond today. after travelling all the way there and walking through the whole store, i finally picked a shelf i liked that was going for $79, so went over to the self service section to get it. and lo and behold, it was out of stock. in all colours. so typical, *sighz*. deciding whether i should go back again some other time and try my luck.

besides not being able to get a new shelf, the day was otherwise a good one. mostly due to good company. :)

okay, okay ; )

mood: really, really good
music: sammi cheng - hen ai hen ai ni (canto version)

alright, i know i haven't updated in a few days. stop yelling at me, already! ;)

so...where was i? hmmm...lessee...guess i'll start with wednesday...

...only i can't remember what happened...

oh yeah. had a meeting at the muiss lounge in the afternoon with renald and ellyne for orientation city trip. managed to get the plan and most of the details squared away, which was a good thing (obviously). it was a pretty short meeting and i just hung around after, reading the straits times and catching up with news from home.

thursday we went to catch charlie's angels 2. as usual only a few people turned up: tone, evelyn and jo. not too bad a film; the plot was predictably predictable, but nonetheless it was pretty entertaining. one of those mindless fun kinda films, yeah? after that the four of us headed to chinatown and went for karaoke, before we headed back to an apartment for another drinking session. it ended up as a sob-story session...a little depressing, but still, overall a good night. plus something great occurred, and i'm quite happy 'bout it. :) if you know me well enough, ask me over icq/aim and i might tell you 'bout it. ; )

friday morning, had mac's for breakfast (typical) then headed home and slept most of the day away. nothing really eventful. worked a bit more on the website. was really hoping that the new credit card would come in the mail so i could get started on buying the webspace, but it didn't, so guess i'll have to wait for next week. :-/

today, slept most of the day again (bad trend) and went to edwin's place for dinner with vic. he's a really good cook; too bad he cooks so rarely. the last time i had his cooking was a couple of months ago. seven of us tonight: edwin, amelia (wife), tony (housemate), candice (tony's gf), mayumi (housemate), vic and i. still, there was so much food we were all really full. had rock melon for dessert, which was good. then later we chilled out in edwin's room and i read an article in air forces monthly about exercise cope tiger (annual tri-lateral air force exercise between usa, thailand and singapore) in thailand which my old air defence unit attends yearly. it was nice to just read up on what the guys back home are up to. apparently they did quite well in the exercise. :)

later on headed over to mcdonald's for our daily hangout. read the age a wee bit, before they shut at midnight, then headed back home. not sure why, but i've been really into reading the papers lately. guess that's a good thing.

heading out to the new ikea at richmond tomorrow. thinking about getting a new shelf for all my school books. hopefully it'll be a good day. (please don't let it rain) i'll let you know what happens. :)

gav out.

Jordan Chan - God Help Me
God will protect me; love will eventually come
In my dreams, I have everything
But reality is often the opposite

The men who love her are many; what do I count for?
I drink away my sorrows in the rain
Anyway happiness is sparing with me

The heart is too certain; she doesn't actually love me
It's curious why no one in the whoe world will love me

Oh God, please help me; getting so old
I don't even have one lover
Loneliness is pathetic; if you haven't loved before
Life is black and white
Oh God, please help me
Why have I been alone for half my life?
Guys like me are nearly extinct
Yet where is she?

okay, had my fun and desecrated a good song. i'm off to dinner.

later, people.

edit: dagnabbit, why doesn't this thing allow for chinese characters?!

Break, Schmeak.

mood: bored
music: chen xiao chun - shen ah jiu jiu wo ba

boring day today. went to c&s to check about club policy and the constitution, then hung out at the muiss lounge reading the straits times. the muiss guys were in the office having a meeting, probably about mmn (monash multicultural night). edwin came along after a while with amelia, but he was heading to the comp labs and we split after a cuppa caf, so i headed home.

think i'll go through more of the php tutorial.

break, schmeak.

Back again, and busy as ever

mood: alright
music: lee hom - wei yi (chinese)

'ey up. right, so the exams are finally over. actually, they've been over a few days, as some of you would probably know, but i've been...*koff*busy*koff*...y'know, with like, post-exam matters. like having a life and stuff like that (gasp).

so anyhoo, final paper was chem on thursday arvo. i told the guys i'd probably finish 6pm thereabouts, but ended up walking out before 4.30. bad, i know. i left the last two pages blank (organic chem), but managed to finish most of the questions. not too bad for half a day's work, i reckon. :-P

yeah so anyway went with joe and ryan down to chaddy. saw vic and yokemon there and went to catch hulk. probably because i was tired (hey, 4 papers in three days!!), i didn't find it very interesting and ended up falling asleep. :( i remember waking up and seeing banner's dad getting electrocuted, muttering "cool" and falling asleep again. ah well, besides the film it was a good hang-out night. : )

on friday i attempted (in vain) to tidy up my room. props to edwin for coming over and helping me move paul's fridge to my room. don't know why i bothered, though; it's still sitting in the middle of my floor waiting to be filled and plugged in. ; ) friday night was post-exam night at tone's place. i showed up with ryan. mostly it was the muiss guys. much drinking, smoking and card-playing. reached home at...umm...can't remember. :-P a good night.

saturday saw me sleeping till noon, then trying to get some of the website done. aug was flying off at 4am sunday morn and wanted to go buy some stuff, so vic and i accompanied him over to the glen for lunch and some shopping. had a sudden weird craving for sashimi and spent $15 on lunch. stupid stomach. got back around 6, washed up and headed off for the big night at the next blue. met willy and tone at huntingdale station, then met up with ryan and chen hoe in the city. had chinese for dinner, and busted some time on daytona while we waited for the girls. headed over to the club at 11-ish, nearly 20-strong. long queues both ways.

unfortunately, i hadn't realised the queue system had changed, and while those of us on freelist were admitted, the rest on guestlist had to take the other queue. my bad. :( the main entry queue was ages long, so they decided to head for the casino instead. the nine of us who made it in had a few drinks and danced a bit, waiting for the rest who got in around 2am. good party, good crowd. the highlight of the night was when ryan and willy nodded off on the couch during a break and got caught by the bouncers. 15minutes sitting outside before they were let back in. that was a laugh. ; )

we were finally kicked out when the club closed at 6, so we headed over to crown and had mac's breakfast. after running around in the rain a wee bit and managing to catch a tram down to i-can't-remember-which station, we realised the cranbourne line only started an hour later. ended up catching one of them van-taxis back to southeast flats, and chen hoe drove the rest of us back to our respective homes. major props dude; you're a life-saver. : ) got into bed at...8+ (at a guess). all in all, a really good night. credit to trent for hosting a spectacular event. :-D

right, so we're down to...sunday. woke up at 1630 (ahem) and ran over to the religious centre for mass. not sure why, guess it was just 'cos i haven't been in a few weeks. ended up being pulled to sit with the choir (not good after two crazy nights and a soar throat) but thankfully i didn't make too much of a fool of myself. 'twas good meeting up with jul and shir again. went for dinner with them, and aaron, alex and alvin. the whole lot of them (17-strong) are heading on a road trip to the grampians and adelaide tomorrow. a lil' envious, i guess. could do with a break myself. ah well. you guys have fun!!! :-D

got the entire young and dangerous series (gu huo zai) from ryan and watched the whole thing last night. awesome stuff. thanks dude. ; )

which pretty much brings me up to speed. in between all the other nonsense, i've been trying to design the new sam website (yeah i know the current one looks like crap), as well as teach myself php (started today). on top of that, orientation for next sem's coming up and me and renald are doing the city trip again. meeting on wednesday with ellyne from MI to discuss the details. *sigh* looks like another busy semester. as the chinese saying goes, "one wave has yet to settle before another rises" or something like that. yeah, my translation sucks, but you get the point. ; )

well, no point griping about it. up and at 'em!

but before that, dinner with edwin at mac's. ; )

gav out.

Virgin Daughters

got this from pris over email. thanks, dear. ;)

A Mother had 3 virgin daughters. They were all getting married within a short time period. Because Mom was a bit worried about how their sex life would get started, she made them all promise to send a postcard from the honeymoon with a few words on how marital sex felt.

The first girl sent a card from Hawaii two days after the wedding. The card said nothing but: "Nescafe!"

Mom was puzzled at first, but then went to the kitchen and got out the Nescafe jar. It said: "Good till the last drop."

Mom blushed, but was pleased for her daughter.

The second girl sent the card from Vermont a week after the wedding, and the card read: "Rothmans"

Mom now knew to go straight to her husband's cigarettes, and she read from the pack: "Extra Long. King Size"

She was again slightly embarrassed but still happy for her daughter.

The third girl left for her honeymoon in the Cape Town. Mom waited for a week, nothing. Another week went by and still nothing. Then after a whole month, a card finally arrived. Written on it with shaky hand writing were the words "South African Airways".

Mom took out her latest YOU magazine, flipped through the pages fearing the worst, and finally found the ad for SAA. The ad said:

"Ten times a day, seven days a week, both ways."

Mom fainted.

Lost and Found
...and lost again?

mood: average
music: eric clapton - wonderful tonight
(ironically)

well, my first update in quite a while. had my first exam on tuesday. mechanics of solids. it was...weird. the formulae that came out were easy enough. in fact, majority of the formulae that was covered in the unit didn't appear in the exam, surprisingly. but the numbers were weird, which led to a lot of second-guessing. ah well.

one down, five to go. ugh.

so the next paper's this coming tuesday. material selection. i understand about half of it. problem is that my final four papers are on tuesday to thursday fortnight, which means i really have to try and cover three units by this coming tuesday, or i'll be quite screwed for those. *sighz* so much to do, and so little time.

oh yeah, and paul's flying back to manila this morning. gonna be gone a month. i'll miss the retard. 'least he left behind all this graphic novels, so hopefully i won't be too bored after exams. ;)

hmm...and i joined up with the orientation team for next semester again. no idea why i keep doing that; not like i don't already have too much to do. besides o-team, i'm still prez and webmaster for sam till the end of next semester, on top of having 31 contact hours.

31. that's thirty-one.

can they do that?

ah well. stupid faculty.

alrighty, guess i'd better head off to bed then. still gotta study tomorrow, after all. will try to update when i can.

take care, y'all.

Which Ivy League University is right for YOU?

Yale
Yale
You're second best, and you know it. Still, those
riding the crimson wave may be slightly
smarter, slightly more prestigious, but you
know you're hipper. I mean, you're not hip --
your a nerd, for fuck's sake -- but you're
hipper.

Which Ivy League University is right for YOU?
brought to you by Quizilla

Those studying in the States, give it a shot and see if you landed in the Uni you were "meant for". ;)
The Student's Psalm

mood: bored
music: none

hmmm...here i am in the college library at 4.30 in the morning trying to work on design process. the drafting part, while tedious, is easy. i just gotta figure out the design bit. have i mentioned i hate design and drafting? ::)

anyhoo, suddenly remembered receiving this over email sometime ago and thought i'd share it with y'all. it's pretty clever. well, to me anyway.

The Student's Psalm

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not flunk;
He keepeth me from lying down when I should be studying.
He leadeth me beside the water cooler for a study break;
He restores my faith in study guides.
He leads me to better study habits for my grades' sake.
Yea, tho' I walk through the valley of borderline grades,
I will not have a nervous breakdown; for Thou art with me.
Thou givest me the answers in moments of blankness;
Thou annointest my head with understanding,
My test paper runneth over with questions I recognize.
Surely passing grades and flying colours
Shall follow me all the days of my examinations;
And I shall not have to dwell in this university forever!!

AMEN!!!

ok, back to work.
.oO{*yawnz*}
matrix, matrix and more matrix. and work. *sighz*

mood: alright
music: bon jovi - i'll be there for you

hmm...played enter the matrix for quite a bit these couple of days. fun game, if a bit choppy. gonna have to head back to doing serious stuff now, though.

in other news, watched the matrix reloaded last night with ninety-nine other clayton students. it was a sam-muiss thing. went with paul, vic, jean, pris, jam...and the rest. you know who you are. too many to list out, sorry. yeah anyway, it was a good film. alex felt the first one was better, but i disagree. although perhaps the "magic" of the whole experience wasn't like watching the first flick, that's to be expected (for me at least). it was the same experiece with star wars. nothing beats the experience of watching the first film (esb, in my case). still, it was a very good film with a lot of action, interesting turns of events, a lot of action, good choreography, a lot more background established, and did i mention a lot of action? but i don't want to say too much in case i spoil it for those who haven't watched it yet. just some tips: when the guy who looks like colonel sanders/sigmund freud starts speaking to neo, listen very closely. and the trailer for revolutions is after the credits. the waiting is ages, but be good, sit and wait. you won't regret it.

ok, guess that's it for now. gotta go do some design and drafting. i hate design and drafting.

"we are getting aggravated."
"yes. we are."

mood: great
music: nat king cole - what a wonderful world

i see trees of green, red roses too
i see them bloom for me and you
and i think to myself
"what a wonderful world"

i see skies of blue, and clouds in white
the bright blessed day, the dark sacred night
and i think to myself
"what a wonderful world"

the colours of the rainbow so pretty in the sky
are also on the faces of people going by
i see friends shaking hands, saying "how do you do"
they're really saying "i love you"

i hear babies crying, i watch them grow
they'll learn much more than i'll ever know
and i think to myself
"what a wonderful world"

ladies and gentlemen, thanks to the wonderful invention called the college network, i now have my hands on a copy of enter the matrix.

in the unlikely (i'm not lad, y'know ^.~) event you don't hear from me in awhile, don't panic. we hope to return you to your regularly scheduled programme soon enough.

hopefully.

If Science cannot prove God, can Science refute the existence of God?

"Let me explain the problem science has with Jesus Christ." The atheist professor of philosophy pauses before his class; then asks one new student to stand.

"You're a Catholic?Anglican?Christian?, aren't you, son?"

"Yes sir," the student says.

"So you believe in God?"

"Absolutely."

"Is God good?"

"Sure! God's good."

"Is God all-powerful? Can God do anything?"

"Yes."

"Are you good or evil?"

"The Bible says I'm evil."

The professor grins knowingly. "Aha! The Bible!"

He considers for a moment. "Here's one for you. Let's say there's a sick person over here and you can cure him. You can do it. Would you help them? Would you try?"

"Yes sir, I would."

"So you're good...!"

"I wouldn't say that."

"But why not say that? You'd help a sick and maimed person if you could. Most of us would if we could. But God doesn't."

The student does not answer, so professor continues. "He doesn't, does he? My brother was a Christian who died of cancer, even though he prayed to Jesus to heal him. How is this Jesus good? Hmmm? Can you answer?"

The student remains silent.

"No, you can't, can you?" the professor says.

He takes a sip of water from a glass on his desk to give the student time to relax.

"Let's start again, young fella. Is God good?"

"Er... Yes," the student says.

"Is Satan good?"

The student doesn't hesitate on this one. "No."

"Then where does Satan come from?"

The student falters. "From... God..."

"That's right. God made Satan, didn't he? Tell me, son. Is there evil in this world?"

"Yes, sir."

"Evil's everywhere, isn't it? And God did make everything, correct?"

"Yes."

"So who created evil?"

Again, the student has no answer.

"Is there sickness? Immorality? Hatred? Ugliness. All these terrible things, do they exist in this world?"

The student squirms on his feet. "Yes."

"So who created them?"

The student does not answer again, so the professor repeats his question, "Who created them? "

There is still no answer. Suddenly the lecturer breaks away to pace in front of the classroom.

The class is mesmerized.

"Tell me," he continues. "Do you believe in Jesus Christ, son?

The student's voice betrays him and cracks. "Yes, professor. I do."

The old man stops pacing. "Science says you have five senses you use to identify and observe the world around you. Have you ever seen Jesus?"

"No sir. I've never seen Him."

"Then tell us if you've ever heard your Jesus?"

"No, sir. I have not."

"Have you ever felt your Jesus, tasted your Jesus or smelt your Jesus? Have you ever had any sensory perception of Jesus Christ, or God for that matter."

"No, sir, I'm afraid I haven't."

"Yet you still believe in him?"

"Yes."

"According to the rules of empirical, testable, demonstrable protocol, science says your God doesn't exist. What do you say to that, son?"

"Nothing," the student replies. "I only have my faith."

"Yes, faith," the professor repeats. "And that is the problem science has with God. There is no evidence, only faith."

The student sits down, defeated. Another student raises his hand to ask a question of his own.

"Professor, is there such thing as heat?"

"Yes," the professor replies. "There's heat."

"And is there such a thing as cold?"

"Yes, son, there's cold too."

"No sir, there isn't."

The professor turns to face the student, obviously interested. The room suddenly becomes very quiet. The student begins to explain.

"You can have lots of heat, even more heat, super-heat, mega-heat, white heat, a little heat or no heat, but we don't have anything called 'cold'. We can hit 458 degrees below zero, which is no heat, but we can't go any further after that. There is no such thing as cold; otherwise we would be able to go colder than -458 degrees. You see, sir, cold is only a word we use to describe the absence of heat. We cannot measure cold. Heat we can measure in thermal units because heat is energy. Cold is not the opposite of heat, sir, just the absence of it."

Silence across the room. A pen drops somewhere in the classroom, sounding like a hammer.

"What about darkness, professor. Is there such a thing as darkness?"

"Yes," the professor replies without hesitation. "What is night if it isn't darkness?"

"You're wrong again, sir. Darkness is not something; it is the absence of something. You can have low light, normal light, bright light, flashing light...but if you have no light constantly you have nothing and it's called darkness, isn't it? That's the meaning we use to define the word. In reality, Darkness isn't. If it were, you would be able to make darkness darker, wouldn't you?"

The professor begins to smile at the student in front of him.

This will be a good semester.

"So what point are you making, young man?"

"Yes, professor. My point is, your philosophical premise is flawed to start with and so your conclusion must also be flawed."

The professor's face cannot hide his surprise this time. "Flawed? Can you explain how?"

"You are working on the premise of duality," the student explains. "You argue that there is life and then there's death; a good God and a bad God. You are viewing the concept of God as something finite, something we can measure. Sir, science can't even explain a thought. It uses electricity and magnetism, but has never seen, much less fully understood either one. To view death as the opposite of life is to be ignorant of the fact that death cannot exist as a substantive thing. Death is not the opposite of life, just the absence of it.

"Now tell me, professor. Do you teach your students that they evolved from a monkey?"

"If you are referring to the natural evolutionary process, young man, yes, of course I do."

"Have you ever observed evolution with your own eyes, sir?"

The professor begins to shake his head, still smiling, as he realizes where the argument is going.

A very good semester indeed.

"Since no one has ever observed the process of evolution at work and cannot even prove that this process is an on-going endeavor, are you not teaching your opinion, sir? Are you now not a scientist, but a preacher?"

The class is in uproar. The student remains silent until the commotion has subsided.

"To continue the point you were making earlier to the other student, let me give you an example of what I mean?"

The student looks around the room. "Is there anyone in the class who has ever seen the professor's brain?"

The class breaks out into laughter.

"Is there anyone here who has ever heard the professor's brain, felt the professor's brain, touched or smelt the professor's brain? No one appears to have done so. So, according to the established rules of empirical, stable, demonstrable protocol, science says that you have no brain, with all due respect, sir.

"So if science says you have no brain, how can we trust your lectures, sir?"

Now the room is silent. The professor just stares at the student, his face unreadable.

Finally, after what seems an eternity, the old man answers.

"I guess you'll have to take them on faith."

for some insane reason i couldn't get onto the net for most of last night (proxy problems again). so anyway, jam came over and i spent the evening/night/early morn watching stuff on the computer. saw eddie murphy's delirious again. he is so good. also watched phone booth. excellent show. two thumbs up. after that watched crouching tiger, hidden dragon. that was okay.

so anyway jam and pris fell asleep on my bed, under pris' blanket but on top of mine. so i was stuck on the beanbag without a kriffing blanket. yay me. luckily the beanbag's comfy. ;)

oh yeah i should probably say something about 40 hours, i guess. hmmm...how should i put it? lemme see...how about: "worst 40 hours of my life"? well no, national service was obviously worse, but you get what i mean. ;) i was soooo bored. and hungry. and net-deprived. and in need of a fag. but the surprising thing is the worst feeling was the lack of music. i guess i'm so used to always having the music on that i kinda took it for granted. after sitting in my room for a while, all quiet and the like, i started hearing white noise. geez, that was bad.

yep, so anyway if you haven't donated to world vision yet, you still can look for me and chip in a couple of bucks to help the lil' kids.

peace out.

music: voices that care - gulf war '91 tribute

well, i've decided.

i'm gonna do it.

40 hours.

and i've created my own famine list. for 40 hours, i'm gonna go without:

  1. food (duh)
  2. electronic games
  3. tv
  4. radio or stereo
  5. computer or internet (horrors)
  6. only incoming calls and incoming sms on my mobile, unless it's an emergency
  7. fags (groan)
yep. our agreed famine period is from tuesday 8pm to thursday 12nn.

wish me luck. or even better, if you know me personally, support me with your donations.

peace, out.

Lonely fear lights up the sky
Can't help but wonder why
You're so far away
There, you have to take a stand
In someone else's land
Life can be so strange
I wish you'd never have to choose
To either win or lose
We could find a way
But I won't turn my back again
With honour I'll defend
So hurry home till then

Stand tall, stand proud
Voices that care are crying out loud
And when you close your eyes tonight
Feel in your heart how our love burns bright

I'm not here to justify the cause
Or to count up all the loss
That's all been done before
Just can't let you feel alone
When there's so much love at home
We're sending out to you
All the courage that you've known
The bravery you've shown
Clearly lights the way
We pray to make the future bright
To make the wrong things right
Right or wrong, we're all praying you remain strong
That's why we're all here singing along

Stand tall, stand proud
Voices that care are crying out loud
And when you close your eyes tonight
Know in your heart how our love burns bright

ugh. why is swmb still down?! *sighz* hmmm...maybe it's a sign He wants me to go study? *peers outside windows for signs of storms brewing*

anyhoo, just checked my exam time-table. there's good, and there's terrible. good news: one week between first and second papers, and another week between second and third papers. terrible news: third to sixth papers are four papers in three days.

yech.

ah well, exams are 4 weeks away, or thereabouts, so i guess it's time to get off me lazy butt and actually take a look at this stuff.

hmmm...swmb seems to be loading after all.....

d'oh! ::(

oh yeah, this article might interest some of you: cops seize dorm pc's in college raid

just got back. went to boba pearl (again) for lunch. lazed around pretty much the whole day. i actually finished up my new book "the real bravo two zero". it was a very interesting and revealing read, definitely recommended by gav. went to a korean restaurant in caulfield for dinner, and ended up watching "national security" at 11.30pm at chaddy. quite a funny show. :)

so anyway, got back to my room and saw a message horny (andrew horne, my ra) left me. he told me to turn off my music when i left the room cuz he doesn't want to wake up at 2am to turn it off. oops. sorry horny! i totally forgot about it. :(

anyway i tried turning back on but couldn't. luckily jam thought of something and managed to get it back up. i'm quite sad without my music, so major props to jam. thanks, dude. :-D

yeah, that's pretty much it fer now. those who haven't read "the real bravo two zero" by michael asher should go get a copy now. but before you do, read andy mcnab's "bravo two zero" and chris ryan's "the one who got away" first. definitely worth the read.

i'm just not a beer guy, i guess. well i am, but only when i have friends there. *shrugz* anyhoo...

went to chaddy with jam and pris. ate at pancake parlour. went to borders and got a new book. i was actually thinking of getting force heretic 1, but then i saw the real bravo two zero and i just stopped cold. from the back cover, it supposedly reveals "the truth" behing the "bravo two zero" mission, and the (supposed) bullshit in the stories as told by andy mcnab (one of my faves) and chris ryan. so yeah, i just had to get it. i guess fh1 can wait. i haven't even read destiny's way yet, so yeah.

oh yeah. and my room light's flickering. no idea why. should check, but i'm too lazy, so i'm just using the doorway light and my desk lamp. note to self: ask jason (maintenance guy) to come take a look tomorrow. buy him a pack of smokes cuz he's always so nice.

yep. think i'll checkout swmb a bit before i go read my new book.

bah.

just broke up with my gf. yes, over the phone. no, it wasn't a pretty sight.

slight sense of relief, i guess. it just wasn't working out, and the whole thing was just depressing.

obviously she didn't take it very well, even though she knew it was coming. but i'm gonna be selfish for once. i've been letting it go on far longer than i should've and it was honestly starting to become a pain. yes, in the rear.

she's not letting me go easily, either. wants me to "pay for my sins" and all that. okay, that sounds wrong but it's the best i could translate it from mandarin. i do feel bad about it. a little. but honestly, at the moment, i can't be fucked. so yeah.

i wish it could've been one of those nicer break ups where everyone parts as friends, and i did try to make it as nice as i could, but nooooooooo. so we're not friends anymore. she's calling me endlessly and i'm ignoring the phone and mobile. i wonder how long this is gonna last. *sighz*

and to the person who's been reporting to her on me, i know who you are. no, she didn't tell me, but i know.
prepare to be so very dead.

feel free to leave comments, even the nasty kind.

and mei, don't tell her i have this blog. thanks.

well, i had quite a nice long nap from 5pm till 12am, so feeling pretty refreshed now, if a lil' hungry. maybe i'll go make some noodles (shaddup wardi :-P)

finally managed to contact my dad. guess what? it's sunday morning in houston and he's out golfing. *rolls eyes* businessmen. ; )
yeah, so hopefully i'll be getting some cash wired over sometime soon.

well, today (or yesterday, rather) wasn't all that great. here's a list of my pet peeves for the day:

1. the title (that thing up that that's supposed to say :: Light The Dark ::) somehow moved itself behind the main div and i can't figure out how to move it back. i think i remember there being a code to make a div be the one on the top, but can't for the life of me remember what it is. anyone who knows, please tell me. pleeeeeeeeeeaaase. thanks.

2. i was trying so hard to figure it out that i forgot about lunch and only made it down to the dining hall at 1245, when the ladies were cleaning up. so all i managed to grab before they kept everything was this pathetic excuse of a pasta. yech.

3. i realised i didn't have any dollar coins to do laundry. and i don't really have much (any) clothes left. luckily, pris came to my rescue, so all's good. thanks girl. : )

4. bv at forums.starwars.com got banned. i don't really know him very well, but he seemed like quite a nice guy. i'm not one to question the modsquad's decisions, but it still is kinda unsettling. anyhoo it got reduced from a pban to a 3 month tempban. so that's good.
in related news, jedi-mmm got pbanned. finally. he/she was really starting to get on my nerves. i guess it's kinda evil thinking that way, but meh.

5. once again, i got next to nothing done on the weekend. nothing new 'bout that, though.

alrighty then, enough of ranting. those of you who're located way over here in clayton, you may like to know that sam has a great deal for you. we're going to watch matrix reloaded on may 17th at 4.45pm, and we're only charging $4.50 for it. you heard right. $4.50 vs $11. that's quite a difference. the only catch: you have to be a monash clayton student and/or a sam member. simple as that. unfortunately, this offer is not open to non-clayton non-members. sorry. :-/

oh yeah, and it's jointly organised with muiss.

okay, guess that's it for now.

well, done all i can for the report, which isn't saying much. some of the results don't make sense, and i'll probably have to talk it over with the guys again tomorrow before handing it in. maybe check with professor marshall. *shrugz*

so anyway, on to more interesting things. yeah, like i said, caught X-2 earlier. pretty good, i thought, even though i'm not an x-men fan. here's an excerpt from a review i posted on the trekkers board:

Just saw X-2 today.

All in all, a pretty good film. I think it was better than the first one, because I honestly don't recall the first one at all.

Interesting storyline where there's more than two sides to the conflict. For X-men comic fans, the plot doesn't deviate from the comics too much, though there are some differences. For me, the most notable difference was that Lady Deathstryke wasn't set up to be Wolverine's "girlfriend". There are some others, but no really major issues.

Gambit fans: I'm sorry, but he doesn't appear in X-2.

The ending was interesting, and definitely setting up for X-3. Those who know about the Phoenix connection will know what I'm talking about. Look out for signs of it throughout the movie.

Easter eggs:

*SPOILER ALERT* (Highlight to see spoilers)

1. Look out for the Phoenix symbol right at the end of the movie when the screen shows the lake. It's very faint, but right there in the middle of the screen.

2. Hank McCoy (Beast) appears as a cameo on a television screen mid-way through the movie. He's in his human non-blue guise though.

3. Remy LeBeau's (Gambit) name appears when Mystique is hacking through Stryker's computer. It's the one right before Eric's (Magneto).

**END OF SPOILERS**

All in all a pretty good show and worth the money, I felt.

yep. oh yeah, managed to fix princess' blog just before this post, so that's a *phew*. for those interested and especially those using the same template as hers (like wyld), what i did was make the "sidebar" div float right to force it up to the same level as the "mainClm" div.

yay, so it's done. now only have to do up wyld's and wardi's (url withheld). wyld's not online at the moment, and her blog doesn't seem to be there for some reason, so guess i'll check with wardi after this. or after i finish modding the trekkers board.

which will be after i cook some noodles 'cuz i'm famished right now.

oh yeah, good news! the money came in yesterday, so i can survive another week. yay! ^^

yeah, guess that's about it for now. cheers.

okay, this'll be a short post. was wondering why i was feeling so sleepy when i realised i've only had one hour of sleep in the last fifty. that's the problem when you're used to not-sleeping: i keep forgetting when the last time i actually slept was.

anyway, managed to hand in the report today. chiu said to hand it in at his office, so me and ben went to his office. he wasn't in, but the door wasn't locked so we went in. damn his office is messy. even messier than my room, which is saying a lot.

so we couldn't figure out which of the eleventeen gazillion piles of paper we were supposed to place our reports on. so we checked with jiv and he told us we're supposed to drop it off in chiu's pigeon-hole at the department office, not in his office. thanks a lot, professor. ::|

yeah so anyway, think i'm gonna go get some shut-eye now. thankfully i've already done the math assignment due tomorrow, save for that last question on particular solutions to 2nd order DEs.

This was brought to may attention at CtrlAltDel

Apparently, American Greetings made the boys at Penny Arcade take down one of their recent comics, due to copyright infringement or something along those lines. It was an amusing parody of those Strawberry Shortcake dolls, with a hint of American McGee (insane creator of American McGee's Alice, which was a twisted, yet fun, game). Personally, I think it's ridiculous. I mean, come on. It's a parody, and a funny one at that. It wasn't ruining the image of the doll (is it even being sold anymore) as most people who visit that site, bar the hopelessly twisted, would be buying any of those dolls. It's a video game comic/site, for crying out loud. Anyways, make your own mind up. You can't see the strip at their site any more so here it is for you. :)

American McGee + Strawberry Shortcake = Comedy

My sister had one of those dolls. Oddly, enough they did smell like strawberries. Also, after 10 years, they don't.

just got back from dinner and the meeting. was late for the meeting. major props to paul for coming and waking me up. thanks bro. ^^;;

meeting didn't go all that smoothly. chaowei didn't turn up, though i suppose it's partly my fault for forgetting to call and remind him last night. but we have meetings every tuesday. i shouldn't have to keep reminding people.

*sighz*

jamil didn't turn up either. wtf. he told me he would be coming and that he would be passing me the sample for the newsletter today. it's already eight weeks overdue!! what's he want me to do?! grovel and beg him to meet a target he agreed was entirely within reasonable demand?!

*sighz*

so no reps from editorial dep. still no newsletter. at least the sponsors are being nice about it and not shouting for our blood. yet.

*sighz*

and the indian dance club was practicing their stuff in the lounge too, like every meeting. 'cept this time they decided to blast their music so calcutta could hear them. blasted loud indian cultural music (pun intended). nothing against the music itself, just that it really doesn't help when you're trying to conduct a meeting and going "shit. what was i going to say again?"

*sighz*

on top of that, the kriffing money still hasn't been transferred over yet. dagnabbit. so i'm still broke. had to borrow a tenner from paul for dinner. thanks again, bro. pleasepleaseplease let the money be in my account by tomorrow. how long does it take to transfer my own money into my own account?!

*sighz*

and to top it all off, i have to finish the tensile test report tonight. due in at chiu's office by 5pm tomorrow. looks like i won't be having much sleep tonight either. if any at all.

*sighz*

ah well, guess i'd better finish up that report.

*burp*

just finished lunch. saw pris earlier when i got back to college. haven't seen her in a few days, so yay. discussing tagging and other html/css stuff with K over aim now. information overload.

think i should probs have a nap before the meeting.

mmm...in a while.

*yawnz*
mood: average
music: kenny loggins - for the first time

okay, change of plans. no sleep after all.

the plus side is I've gotten a little more of the report done. (a wee bit)

hmmz.
mood: better
music: bob carlisle - butterfly kisses

mmm...well, managed to finish off those stupid math questions. and half done one of the reports. the rest and the other report will have to wait till i talk to jiv and joe. haven't done the agenda, but it's a lil' late to send it out to the others now. ah well, guess i'll just have to play it by ear like all the other meetings. (if you're a sam member, i didn't just say that. nope, your president always goes prepared for committee meetings. always. :-P)

well, it's 0340 and i don't feel sleepy yet. two lectures tomorrow from nine till twelve. comm meeting at five. still broke. so what's new? hmmz hopefully the money i'm transferring across from home will arrive tomorrow. should last me another week. really have to speak to dad soon. *sighz*

ah well.

think i'll head out for a quick fag and log into swmb for a while before heading to bed. oh yeah, have to go mod the trekkers board too.

hope it's still in one piece.

mood: bad
music: george michael - careless whisper

damn.

guess what happened? i went for my 1100 lecture, got back at noon, decided to take a nap since my next class was at 1400, my alarm clock died on me, and i just woke at seven.

damn.

missed two hours of drafting tute.
haven't eaten a thing all day, and now the dining hall's shut.
still flat broke, so looks like it'll be noodles tonight again.
still have to finish the two reports and the math.
plus write up the agenda for tomorrow's meeting.

damn.

*sighz* life's just getting better and better, innit? well, better get some food down my throat first, then muck about with the assignments.

you guys have fun. ::)
Mood: So-so
Music: Alanis - That I would Be Good

mmm...didn't sleep again last night. this is so definitely not good. ah well, at least the nine o'clock tute is cancelled today. should i go for maths lecture at 11? considering taking a nap, but that means i'll probably miss the lecture. *sighz* can't figure out the math problems for the assignment either. and two lab reports due this week. oh i'm so dead. ah well, guess i'll have to check with jiv later about the tensile test report. hope he has some idea how to start. oh yeah, have to check the lab results with joe for professor marshall's class too. and write up the agenda for tomorrow's committee meeting. damn and there's drafting today as well. hmmz...looks like it's gonna be a busy day.

ah well.
Okay, hopefully nothing screws up this time.
Oh fuck. The template screwed up and all the links that took me so long to put up are gone.

Fuck.

They'll be up again soon.

*sighz*
Took this off iftheshoefits. It's pretty hilarious.
Thanks dear! ^^

PROJECT GENESIS: Internal Corporate Correspondence

(or why we have 9 planets)

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Gabriel, Marketing Director

The market research conducted by our department for the Genesis project, shows that systems of the following configuration will generate the highest level of consumer enthusiasm:
Planet(s): 1
Radius: 3,000 km
Gravitational pull: 0.5g
Land/Water ratio: 1:1
Temperature: +24 C
Atmosphere: Oxygen
Oceans/Seas: Fresh Water
Rivers: Milk, Honey
Fauna: Herbivores
Peripherals: 2 luminary bodies, (for day, night).
Orbital Speed: 0.0007 RPM (1 revolution / 24h cycle)

Resolution:
Forwarding to the strategy planning department for preparation.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Michael, Strategy Planning Manager

In order to minimize the overall project costs, I propose we power both luminary bodies using one energy source, and substitute Nitrogen for Oxygen.
Comments:
Leave at least 50% of the oxygen - otherwise we run the risk of user suffocation.
-- Raphael

25% Should suffice.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology Department

In the course of our work on project Genesis, we have run into some difficulties (specifically in the "Let there be Light" phase of the project):
We do not currently have access to a source of uninterrupted light that can be channeled into two separate luminary bodies. I propose we utilize a standard "Red Dwarf" type light source for daytime illumination, and use a mirror for nighttime light.

Comments:
Upgrade to "Yellow Dwarf". The cost differential is minimal, but aesthetically, the look is far more impressive.
-- Gabriel (Marketing dept.)

But that's a multi-client light source! Why would the user need it for a single-planet system?
-- Lucifer

The marketing department will tell to the user what he needs or doesn't need.
-- Gabriel

Lucifer, please restrict your comments to questions within the field of your competence. I'm approving the "Yellow Dwarf".
-- Jehovah

By the way, with the level of light output generated by a Yellow Dwarf, we can use a regular planetoid instead of a mirror.
-- Michael

Agreed.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology Department

The recent deviations from the specification introduced the following problems into the system:
The mass of the uninterruped light source is significantly greater than the mass of the planet. Due to this, the light source cannot be in orbit around the planet. Instead, it is the planet that is orbiting the light source.

Furthermore, due to the energy output of the light source, we are observing surface temperature that consistently exceeds the spec. by a factor of 2. However if we move the planet further away from the light source, the overall dimensions of the system will grow significantly.

Comments:
A larger system will probably benefit us from the marketing standpoint, but the fact that the planet is rotating around a peripheral device may lead to self esteem issues on the part of the user. Could we perhaps change the Gravitational Constant to compensate?
-- Gabriel

Changing the Gravitational Constant will result in compatibility problems down the line
-- Michael

What difference is it to the user what orbits what? Let Marketing come up with some kind of theory of Relativity.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology Department

After the increase in the orbital radius, all attempts to accelerate the planet to specified velocity have consistently lead to a system crash. (The planet escapes from orbit into outer space.)
By the way, the nighttime luminary exhibits the same behavior.

Comments:
The internal behavior of the system is irrelevant. We must deliver on the user experience. Why not make the planet revolve around its own axis? The user will then think that both the Sun and the Moon are orbiting it with the speeds originally specified.
-- Gabriel

Won't the user catch on?
-- Jehovah

Even if he does, it won't be til' the project is long delivered.
-- Gabriel

Agreed.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Raphael, QA & Support Lead

Initial testing has revealed the following defects:

We are observing consistent overheating.
The axis of revolution has shown a 33 deg. declination from the vertical, resulting in cyclic temperature anomalies.
The rivers' throughput falls far short of expectations.
Herbivore fauna (as specified) is missing.
The orbit is unstable. Planet tends to fall into the Sun.

Resolution:
Forwarding to the tech. department for review.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology Department

We are observing consistent overheating.
What else did you expect with that Land/Water ratio? For proper cooling to occur we need a ration of 1:3 - 1:4.

The axis of revolution has shown a 33 deg. declination from the vertical, resulting in cyclic temperature anomalies.
We're working on it.

The rivers' throughput falls far short of expectations.
This is because milk curdles, and honey crystallizes.

Herbivore fauna (as specified) is missing.
Hebivores require vegitation, which cannot grow in this heat without water. I propose to put water into the rivers. This should also help resolve problem (3).

The orbit is unstable. Planet tends to fall into the Sun.
We will intoroduce another planet on a larger orbit to serve as a gravitational counterweight.

Comments:
There's not enough room to reduce the landmass. We will have to increase the area of the oceans. This will result in a larger diameter and stronger gravitational pull. Plus the extra planet...
-- Michael

That's allright, the user will just have to live with it. We will present the extra planet as an added feature. However, we have already announced the Milk and Honey, will have to at least leave them in the most prominent rivers.
-- Gabriel

Let me remind you that the deadline for this project is fast approaching, and yet you are still beating a dead horse. Speaking of which, why have the designers not come up with a horse concept yet, and are still mucking about with the dinosaurs? Who needs these dinosaurs anyway?
-- Jehovah

Generally speaking, the user has shown great interest in dinosaurs.
-- Gabriel

Fine. But we must have horses too.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Raphael, QA & Support Lead

In addition to the unsolved problems with the axis, the planet now has the tendency to fly away into space.
Herbivores are missing again.

Resolution:
Forwarding to the tech. department for review.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology Department

In addition to the unsolved problems with the axis, the planet now has the tendency to fly away into space.
We'll add another counterweight, this time on a smaller orbit.

Herbivores are missing again.
They seem to have multiplied, ate all the vegitation and died out.

Comments:
How many counterweights do you need?!
-- Michael

All in all after the calibration we were able to stabilize the system at nine.
-- Lucifer

Did I understand correctly? Instead of one planet the user will be getting 9?!
-- Jehovah

So what? Eight of them will be uninhabitable anyway.
-- Lucifer

The user doesn't need to know. Half of these planets cannot be seen without a telescope. I suggest ammending the user manual with an 11-th Commandment: "Thow Shalt Not Invent A Telescope".
-- Gabriel

No. Then they will definitely invent it.
-- Jehovah

By the way, after the orbital radius was increased, the brightness of the night-time light source fell below the specified minimum. I propose using a mirror after all.
-- Raphael

Where were you before? We just finished balancing the system! Should we start over?
-- Lucifer

There will be no starting over! The project deadline is in six days! Lucifer, either make it all work or you will be demoted and transferred to a different post.
-- Jehovah

To: General Director Jehovah
From: Lucifer, Head of System Technology Department

> Lucifer, either make it all work or you will
> be demoted and transferred to a different post.

How is it my fault, if I didn't get a proper spec?

Anyway... The axis will have to stay angled as it is. The garden of Eden at least, will get +24C, but if the user goes wandering around elswhere, that's his problem. Doesn't look like we'll be able to finish the dinosaurs, but at least the horses will definitely be done. Milk and Honey are out, we made the rivers run with water, although it's bringing salt out into the oceans and seas. We had to introduce some Predators to keep the Herbivores from eating up all the vegetation again. However, we didn't have time to set the predators up to distinguish the users from their prey.

In short, it will all probably work out.

Comments:
Let it be so.
-- Jehovah

Epilogue

The head of System Technology Department, Lucifer, was in the end demoted and transferred, as punishment for unsanctioned assistance lent to the user in the usability testing phase of project Genesis.
Updated the links section. If anyone has a problem with their site/blog being linked/not linked here, email me.

Or icq/aim/msn me.

Or call/sms me.

Or just walk over and pound on my door.

Whichever's most convenient for you. ;)
Okay, I've set-up the Tagboard and Shoutout, and they should hopefully be working.

*crosses fingers*
Ok, I think it's finally working properly.

Yay.
Well, it's a start. So there. ::)
